qFit – Quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test

Overview

qFIT is a quantitative immunochemical test (FIT) used to detect human haemoglobin in stool. It is widely use in colorectal cancer screening and triage pathways to assess the likelihood of significant bowel disease and to support decisions around further investigation.

qFIT is an established, non-invasive test used in both population screening and symptomatic pathways.

What is qFIT?

qFIT measures the concentration of human haemoglobin in a stool sample using an immunochemical assay.

Unlike qualitative FIT, qFIT provides an numerical result, allowing clinicians to apply defined thresholds to support clinical decisions-making.

  • Non-invasive stool test
  • Quantitative result
  • Widely used in UK clinical pathways
  • Suitable for screening and triage

How qFIT Works

1. Stool sample collection
The patient provides a stool sample using a dedicated sample collection kit

2. Laboratory analysis
The Sample is analysed using an immunochemical assay specific for human haemoglobin

3. Result reporting
A quantitative result is reported to support clinical assessment and follow-up. qFIT does not require bowel preparation, fasting, or anaesthesia.

Clincial Use of qFIT

qFIT is commonly used to:

  • Support colorectal cancer screening programmes
  • Triage patients with lower-risk bowel symptoms
  • Prioritise referral for colonoscopy or further investigations

qFIT is used within colorectal cancer pathways to support risk stratification and referral decisions. Colonoscopy remains the reference standard for diagnosis.
